Guidelines

SubmissionGuidelines

JKR accepts submissions year-round. We invite contributions from scholars researching any aspect of Korean religions from a wide range of disciplinary perspectives, including religious studies, theology, philosophy, cultural studies, literature, folklore, art, anthropology, history, sociology, and political science.

Articles submitted for consideration must not have been previously published or be currently under review elsewhere. JKR also welcomes book reviews and review articles. All submissions and inquiries should be sent to the Managing Editor: journalkr@sogang.ac.kr.

1. Format

Manuscripts should be written in English and submitted as email attachments in Microsoft Word format (.docx files). The text must be double-spaced with ample margins and set in Times New Roman, 12-point font.

2. Length

Article manuscripts should be under 10,000 words in length, including endnotes. Bibliographies and appendices (if appropriate) are additional. Book reviews should not exceed 1,000 words, and review articles should be under 3,000 words. Please contact the Managing Editor before submitting articles or reviews that exceed these limits.

3. Contents

Article manuscripts should include the following components: a cover sheet; an abstract (200 words) followed by a list of five keywords; the main text; bibliography; biographical note (100 words); appendices (if appropriate); tables with captions (each table on an individual page); and a list of figure captions. The cover sheet must include the title of the article, the author's name, affiliation, academic status, and contact details (current e-mail, postal address, and telephone number). The first page of the article proper should feature the title but must exclude the author's name and affiliations to ensure anonymity. Authors should notify the Managing Editor as soon as possible should any of this information change.

4. Style

Submissions must use the author-date system for citations and endnotes for supplementary information. A reference list must be provided in the format recommended by the most recent edition of the Chicago Manual of Style (Chicago: University of Chicago Press).

5. Pagination & Formatting

Formatting should be kept to a strict minimum. The manuscript should be formatted for A4 paper and pages must be numbered. Titles and subtitles should be the same font and size as the running text.

6. Tables/Figures

Authors are encouraged to submit tables, figures, maps, and other illustrations along with their manuscripts. However, these should be submitted on separate pages rather than embedded within the main text.

7. Romanization

For Korean, submissions may follow either the McCune-Reischauer system or the Revised Romanization of Korean (South Korean government system), provided that the chosen system is used consistently throughout the entire manuscript. The Hepburn system should be used for Japanese, and the Pinyin system for Chinese.

8. Hangul/Chinese Characters

The use of Hangul and Chinese characters within the text is permitted. While providing hanmun (Chinese characters) for titles and names in citation lists is optional, it must be applied consistently if used. English translations of non-English titles for books and journal articles are strictly required.

9. Editing

All submitted articles must arrive in publishable English. JKR will not be responsible for translation or major substantive editing. Once accepted, articles will undergo standard copyediting by the journal's editorial staff. Corrections will be submitted to the authors for final approval.

10. Evaluation Procedures

Submissions that pass the first round of editorial review will proceed to a two-person, double-blind peer review. Submissions are graded into four categories: 1) publishable, 2) publishable with minor revisions, 3) resubmittable after major revisions, and 4) rejected.

11. Copyright and Licensing

Upon acceptance of a manuscript, authors will be required to sign a Copyright Transfer Agreement or an Exclusive License Agreement. This grants the Journal of Korean Religions (JKR) the exclusive right to publish, reproduce, digitalize, and distribute the article in all forms and media, including print and electronic formats. Authors retain the right to use their published work for personal, non-commercial, or educational purposes (such as institutional repositories or personal websites), provided that full bibliographic acknowledgment is given to the original publication in JKR.

12. Author Contributions and Disclosures

To ensure research integrity, all submissions must include a statement disclosing any potential conflicts of interest (financial, personal, or institutional) that could bias the work. Authors must also explicitly state all funding sources and grant numbers that supported the research. For co-authored manuscripts, a clear statement outlining each author's specific contribution (e.g., conceptualization, formal analysis, drafting, or critical revision) must be provided upon submission. Authors are responsible for ensuring compliance with international research ethics standards.
